To our many friends and supporters of Sammie's Friends,

We are saddened and shocked to inform you that Nevada County officials have rejected our proposal to continue to operate Sammie's Friends at the Nevada County Animal Shelter.

We are devastated, heart broken and sad about this. As you all know we have worked for 17 years to make Nevada County a great place to be an animal. We requested $743,000 from the county to continue running the shelter. For that $743,000 this county will receive $1,147,200 worth of service, because Sammie's Friends springs for this additional amount through money brought in from our Thrift Store, writing grants, donations from the community and afar, events and sales of calendars and a few other things. For the $650,000 they give Placer County they will receive $650,000 worth of service. Seems straightforward to me. Placer County is not a no kill shelter as one of the county people stated in comments to the Union. Although in a previous law suit this county agreed they would not kill for reasons of space, under the Sheriff's Department we know sick and injured animals who need over a certain amount of care will be killed and behavioral problems will be eliminated. They don't have a Beverley in Placer County to work with the wayward critters.

We and our staff will be considering what we can do next to reverse this unwise decision. We hope you will join us in an effort to keep Sammie's Friends a vital part of saving animals at the Shelter and in the Community. Stay tuned for more information. There will be a Town Hall Meeting to be announced soon. We will be keeping you up to date as things unfold.

We want to thank our wonderful community for all the support you have given us over so many years. We hope you will continue this support during this difficult time.

Hello to our Fabulous Supporters -

We are excited to have our town hall meeting.  We hope that you will be able to come.  You have no idea how much comfort your support and love has brought to us during this difficult time.  Thank you for that.

The meeting is on Wednesday, April 25 at 5:30 at the Foothill Event Center, 400 Idaho- Maryland Rd.

We are expecting quite a crowd so we have located some additional parking:  Sammie's Nifty Thrift Store,   627 East Main,  Animal Save Parking Lot, 520 E. Main,  For the Love of Pets Veterinary Clinic, 561 Idaho-Maryland Rd. These parking lots are a bit of a hike from the Event Center.

If you have health problems and would have difficulty walking to the event center and then hiking up the hill to the center I would suggest arriving early so that you can get a parking space close to the center.

We have set up a special e-mail address to receive communication in preparation for our town hall.  If you have questions, comments, thoughts, ideas you would like us to be sure to know about in preparation for this meeting please send your comments to that address.

The Board of Supervisors will be meeting on Tuesday, April 24 at 9 am.  They realize that many people would like to have their voices heard regarding the possibility of our county losing the services of the animal loving Sammie's Friends.  If you would like to be heard please come to this meeting at the Rood Administration Center, 950 Maidu Avenue, Nevada City.  The Board meeting room is on the first floor just as you walk in the front door.

Please read this explanation for making a point at the BOS:

If you have a Sammie's Friends t-shirt please wear it or wear a red shirt of blue shirt (those are Sammie's Friends colors)

With Love and Immense Gratitude,

Hello Sammie's Friends supporters-

We want to give you an update on where we stand with negotiations with the County on extending our contract.  We had our third meeting this week and came to an understanding on how the contract length will be extended.  We are working on extending our current contract that has written into it the option of 5 one-year extensions.  This seems adequate to keep the ball rolling.  What is still a major issue is how much funding we will receive to operate the Shelter.  Our next meeting will be on Friday, May 18 at which time the County will put something on the table regarding funding.  We are holding firm to a funding level of $743,000 for the first year knowing that is what we have carefully determined will cover the essential programs we have at the Shelter.  We will let you all know how things proceed after the next meeting.

Your voices have been heard.  The townhall meeting was a huge success and the turn out touched our hearts.  The County agreed to drop negotiations with Placer County and begin re-negotiating a new contract with Sammie's Friends.  Cheryl and Curt will be meeting weekly with county officials until a new contract is agreed upon.  Stay tuned right here for more information in the coming weeks/months.  Thank you!  We can't do what we do without the love and support of our fabulous animal loving community.

We had our fourth negotiation meeting on Friday and a lot was accomplished. There was much discussion about budgets, but in the end, the County put a proposal on the table. While it was below what Sammie's Friends was asking, it was not far off. Sammie's Friends countered with an offer to split the difference. This offer will be taken back to the Sheriff to ponder. We expect to hear back early this week. It was an encouraging meeting and we look forward to this week. Our next, and possibly our last meeting will be this coming Thursday. We will keep you posted.

Hi all of you Sammie's Friends, I wanted to update you on contract negotiations. As of Monday, May 29, 2018 we have agreed to the financial aspects of the contract going forward. The County has split the difference between what we were asking for and what they were offering. We are satisfied with this arrangement. However, we have not yet seen the terms and conditions. As you can probably guess, the devil is in the details. We do not expect any surprises here, but we have to go through them when we get a copy. We expect this to be soon, as time is running out. Please stay tuned and we will let you know as soon as the final details have been agreed to.

To our friends of Sammie's Friends, here is the latest update on our negotiations with the County for a contract extension so that we can continue to operate the Animal Shelter. In my last status report, we had come to terms with the financial aspects of the contract, but we had not seen, in writing, the terms and conditions associated with the contract. After almost three weeks, we have finally seen the contract that the County has prepared. Our negotiating team has gone over this proposed contract and we have found several items that are not as we agreed to in our face-to-face negotiating sessions in May. This is disappointing. We are in the process of making proposed changes to this contract that are in line with what we agreed to in our earlier sessions. We will see how this works out. We will keep you informed. Time is running out.

Hi all you Sammie's Friends, great news. Cheryl signed the contract with the County for us to continue to operate the Animal Shelter for the next year with an automatic renewal for a second year once we hire a replacement for Cheryl and myself. We are glad this long and exhaustive process is over and we can focus on taking care of our furry friends.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement over the last 6 months. It has been a real roller coaster ride.
