Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer with Sammie’s Friends
Want to make a difference for animals in our community? Sammie’s Friends depend on our amazing volunteers to help care for shelter animals, keep things running smoothly, and help pets find their forever homes! There are lots of ways to get involved, whether you enjoy working directly with animals or prefer helping behind the scenes. Volunteers can help with dog walking, enrichment, cat care, front desk, animal transportation, trail maintenance, adoption events, fundraisers, and our Nifty Thrift Shop. From giving dogs exercise and companionship to answering phones, greeting visitors, logging donations, and helping keep our facilities clean, every bit of help makes a difference. Many roles include training, so you don't need to have experience to get started!
DOG WALKERS
If you like dogs and enjoy a little exercise, this is a fun job! The work you do really helps get them adopted. All of the dogs at the shelter get walked twice a day, every day, 365 days a year. It takes a whole crew of people to accomplish this and we are always looking for more walkers. Join us!
CAT CARE
Are you a fan of feline's? Our shelter cats are always looking for more human assistants to help attend to all of their needs. The shelter cares for between 50-100 cats a day, all year long. Figure in kitten season each year and those numbers increase! It's enough to make even "a crazy cat lady" run for the hills!
FOSTER HOMES
Fostering a dog or a cat is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have (other than adopting, of course!). When you foster, you agree to take a homeless pet into your home and give him or her love, care, and attention, which ultimately helps us find them a perfect home. The shelter provides their food and any needed medications.

OFFICE HELPERS
Are you a "people person"? Do you have light office skills that could be put to good use, like answering phones and greeting the public? We have two offices (dog facility and cat facility) that both need the support of volunteers every single day.
ANIMAL TRANSPORTER
The mission of Sammie's Friends is to raise funds to provide medical care for our shelter animals. This means that we make many vet appointments throughout the week. We are always looking for more volunteers to help transport our animals to and/or from their appointments.
EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS
One of the many reasons why Sammie's Friends is so successful is because of the many adoption events and fundraisers that are held throughout the year. Volunteers are always needed to help organize and plan these events. (READ MORE...)
SAMMIE'S NIFTY THRIFT SHOP
Sammie's Nifty Thrift Shop raises huge funds for our shelter animals and other disadvantaged animals in Nevada County. We are always looking for volunteers to help sort and price clothing, stock racks and shelves, receive and sort donated items, and more!
